1
[1] Know the Lord who created you; as He created you in His Features and Example while you are on Earth, do not forget the Lord who established you, saved you, and whom Israel glorified. He placed you in the Garden so you might be joyful and tend the Earth.
[2] When you broke His Command, He sent you away from the Garden toward this world—which He cursed because of you—that grows nettles and thorns.
[3] For you are Earth, and she (the ground) is Earth; you are dust, and she is dust; you are soil, and she is soil.
2
You are fed by the grain found from her, and you will return to her. You will be soil until He chooses to raise you, and He shall examine the sins you committed and all your iniquity.
[4] Know what you will answer Him at that time.
3
Think of the good and evil you did in this world; examine whether the evil or the good would abound—test yourself.
[5] If you do good, it is a good thing for you, so that you might be joyful on the day when the dead arise.
[6] But if you do evil, woe to you! For you will receive hardship according to the work of your hands and the evil of your reasoning.
4
If you do an evil thing to your companion and do not fear the Lord, you will receive your hardship.
[7] And if you betray your companion, and if you call on the Lord’s Name and swear a lie—as you will receive hardship according to your work—woe to you.
[8] You tell lies to your companion, pretending they are the Truth, even though you know you spoke a lie.
[9] You persuade those around you with your falsehoods as if they were the Truth, multiplying things that are not true; you will receive hardship according to your sin. You deny your companion while telling him, "I will give to you," what you have no intention of giving.
[10] When you say "I will give" in your pure reasoning, demons make use of you like dogs; they make you forget everything.
5
Whether you withhold or desire to give, they do not know the person for whom they gather wealth. As it has been said:
6
"They shall grow fat"—the money of this world appetizes you so that you might "fatten" the money that will not benefit you and that you will not eat.
[11] And again, as it has been said: "Adam’s lying children make a false balance." As for them, they go from robbery to robbery; the money of this world appetizes you.
[12] O people, do not place your hope in distorted scales and balances, in stealing another’s money, in taking money through transgression, in infringing on your companion’s property, or in stealing his field.
7
Avoid all the lies you do for your own profit at your companion’s expense.
[13] If you do this, you will receive your hardship according to your work.
[14] O people, be fed by the honest work of your hands; do not desire robbery. Do not love to rob and eat another’s money without justice or by what is not due.
[15] Even if you eat it, it will not satisfy you.
8
When you die, you will leave it for another; even if you grow fat on it, it will not benefit you.
[16] And if your money increases, do not let it distort your reasoning. As the money of sinners is like smoke from a griddle that the wind takes away, the small amount of money accumulated in Truth is better than the wealth of sinners.
