R. Isaac discoursed on the verse: “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons” (S.S. 2, 3). ‘Just as the apple is superior in its colouring to all other fruits, so the Holy One, blessed be He, is distinguished from all forces, higher and lower.

Observe that the Holy One, blessed be He, is compared to the apple, which has three colours, and the Community of Israel to the lily, which has two, red and white.
