They patented a way to record your soul. Then a way to reach your nerves through a screen. Then a way to steer your brain to a chosen state and hold it there. The paperwork is public. The lab work is funded. The only thing left to build is you.
Start with the thing that should not be possible — because it is already sitting in a laboratory. At Rockefeller University in New York, scientists can reach into the skull of a living animal and switch its brain cells on and off. By remote. No wires. No surgery. They call it magnetogenetics, and your tax dollars paid for it.
Read that again. Not a theory. Not a trailer for the future. A published result in the journal Nature, with a grant number attached. For a hundred years the horror writers imagined the moment a machine could pull the strings inside a human head. That moment has a date stamp now.
Here is the part that keeps the light on: the hard part was never the science. It was the paperwork. And the paperwork was finished a long time ago.
THREE PATENTS. ONE AGENDA: MANIPULATE, CONTROL, RECORD.
Exhibit One reads like the first line of an airport paperback. It is a real United States patent application. Alexander Bolonkin, filed 2006, published 2009 as US 2009/0062677 A1: “Method of Recording and Saving of Human Soul for Human Immortality.”
His thesis is cold and total. A human soul is only the information in the human brain. Just data. And data can be copied. His “installation” is a lifelong harness — a camera at your head, a microphone for every word, sensors, a clock, a memory to hold the “life film.” Run it cradle to grave, pour it onto chips, and you have decanted a person into a jar.
He called it immortality. Read it as a horror writer and it is colder: a copy of you that you do not control — and that does not need you breathing to keep running.
THE THING REACHING THROUGH YOUR MONITOR
Bolonkin wanted to copy you. Hendricus Loos wanted to touch you — through the screen you stare into half your waking life. US 6,506,148 B2, granted January 2003: “Nervous System Manipulation by Electromagnetic Fields from Monitors.”
Pulse the images on a monitor near one-half hertz or 2.4 hertz, the patent says, and it emits fields that excite a “sensory resonance” in whoever sits nearby. The pulsing can be hidden inside the show. Folded into the ad. Run at an intensity too faint to see. Subliminal, delivered “by a simple computer program.”
The oldest line in horror is the call is coming from inside the house. Loos patented the version where the call comes from inside the television — and the house is your living room.
The third patent closes the loop. US 6,488,617 B1, granted December 2002, assigned to a company whose real name is Universal Hedonics: “Method and Device for Producing a Desired Brain State.”
Sensors read your brain. A computer compares it to a desired state — a target chosen by someone who is not you. Then magnets fire fields into your head to close the gap. And it does not stop; the loop runs “continuously until the gap is minimized and/or removed.” It keeps nudging until you match the setpoint.
Read the three as one sentence. One records the self. One reaches the nervous system through a screen. One steers the brain and holds it there. That is not three inventions. That is one assembly line: copy, reach, steer.
THIS DIDN’T START IN 2002
These patents are not outliers. In 1976, Robert Malech was granted US 3,951,134 — “Remotely Monitoring and Altering Brain Waves.” Beam a signal at the skull, read what bounces back, then change it. No electrodes. They patented mind-reading before the home computer was a household object.
In 2000 came US 6,011,991 (Mardirossian) — a system that monitors brain activity and claims the remote firing of select brain nodes. Behind them sits a seventy-year shelf: a Hypnotic Inducer (1956), a Nervous System Excitation Device (1962), an RF Hearing System (1970). All pointed at the same soft target: the three pounds of tissue you always assumed were yours alone.
REMOTE PSYCHIC DRIVING
A skeptic can shrug at a patent; a patent is a claim, not a crime. So meet the rap sheet. The United States government ran non-consensual mind-control experiments on its own citizens. The program was MKULTRA. Not a theory — declassified history, dragged into daylight by a Senate committee.
Inside it was a technique with a nightmare’s name: psychic driving. Play a recorded message into a drugged patient tens of thousands of times until the old self breaks and a new one can be written over the wreckage. That was the analog version — a tape loop and a ruined human being in a Montreal hospital.
The patents in this file are the remote, automated, scalable edition. You don’t need to kidnap the subject if you can reach the nerves through the screen and keep a perfect recording to measure the copy against.
The hardware kept pace. In 1962, Navy-funded researcher Allan Frey proved pulsed microwaves could make a person hear sound inside the skull — no speaker, no eardrum, even the deaf perceived it. By 1973, Walter Reed embedded recognizable speech in a microwave beam. By 2002, the United States Air Force simply owned the patent for it: US 6,470,214. The whisper in your head can now be addressed to you by name.
THE LAB IS AHEAD OF THE PATENTS
Come back to that Rockefeller lab, because it is the proof none of this stayed on paper. The researchers named it themselves: radiogenetics, magnetogenetics. A radio wave or a magnet pops a cellular channel open on command, firing the neuron from outside the body.
They proved it by switching a mouse’s blood-sugar machinery on and off from outside its body, and there is an NIH grant on file aimed at the human brain. Rockefeller’s light-beads microscopy can now record more than one million neurons at once.
Then there is DARPA. Its “Silent Talk” program aimed to let soldiers speak mind-to-mind from the EEG of intended speech. In 2018 it launched N3 — a portable device to read from and write to the brain, with no surgery. Sixteen channels. Six teams funded. Stated uses on the record: controlling swarms of drones, and “active cyber defense.” Not a medical implant for the sick — a mass-deployable, two-way link to the human brain, built for soldiers first and everyone else after.
WHY BUILD A TWIN? TO RETIRE THE ORIGINAL.
Through our intelligence files runs one terrible thread: a program building digital replicas of human beings inside underground supercomputers. Call it the Digital Soulcatcher. A twin of you, fed on your “life film,” learning your voice, your tells, your tiny unrepeatable ways of being you.
Ask the question Columbo would ask on his way out the door. Why train a copy at all? One answer closes the loop: to stand in for the original. A clone that answers your mail, speaks in your voice, signs your name — steered by a hand that is not yours.
Somewhere underground, a copy of you is being trained right now. It never sleeps. It never says no. It never dies. The day it is better at being you than you are, the original becomes the inconvenient, disobedient version.
FOLLOW THE MONEY
Technology this expensive doesn’t run on enthusiasm. It runs on budget lines — and the budget lines for giving every human a digital double are already public. The European Union has committed over one hundred million euros to its Virtual Human Twins initiative, a computational twin for every person, with the platform process launched in June 2025.
In the United States, the government’s own ARPA-H is funding AI patient “digital twins” for tens of millions of dollars. Notice the wrapper: “personalized treatment,” “critically ill patients” — the softest possible label on the hardest possible capability. A working model of you, held by someone else.
Every piece arrives dressed as a kindness. Lower a diabetic’s blood sugar by remote. Help the paralyzed. Personalize your care. Each is defensible alone. Assemble them, and you get the oldest nightmare there is — wearing a lab coat.
FULL-SPECTRUM DOMINANCE, DOWN TO THE SOUL
Orwell imagined a telescreen you couldn’t turn off, watching you. This is worse, and further along. The screen doesn’t just watch — it reaches back through the glass. The State doesn’t just punish wrong thought — it edits the thought toward a chosen state and holds it. And it keeps a perfect recording of who you were, so the copy can be graded against the original until the copy wins.
Winston Smith’s last refuge was “the few cubic centimetres inside your skull.” The patents in this file are a method, a device, and a funding schedule for annexing exactly that.
A horror movie comforts you — the lights come up and the monster was only celluloid. This file does the opposite. Every monster in it has a filing number, a grant line, or a journal citation. We made up none of them. We only laid the pages side by side until the machine became visible.
The door to the inside of your head was patented open in 1962. Whether it stays open is still, for now, a decision the living get to make. So make it. Stay human. Stay loud. Guard the few cubic centimetres. They filed the method, they built the device, they scheduled the funding — but the one thing they cannot patent is a person who refuses to be decanted. Be that person.
